5 Reasons to Have an Elopement or Wedding First Look

A first look is when a bride and groom, bride and bride, or groom and groom see each other for the first time on the day of their wedding. It is a private moment between the couple for them to absorb the moment and weight of the day.

Traditionally, a couple may wait until the alter to see each other however it’s becoming popular to take that time before walking down the alter for a number of reason.

However, it does come down to what is important to you guys.

5 Reasons to have a first look

Everyone knows first looks make for great photos but there are far more benefits to setting aside time before your ceremony.

Reason #1: Intimate Time with your partner

Your wedding day goes by so fast. There’s often times a timeline and if you’re having a traditional wedding you have guests you want to make sure to talk to. With all the obligations, it leaves little time for you and your partner to have alone. A first look is a great opportunity to take a second and be in the moment with your soon-to-be spouse.

To add a special touch, you can incorporate letter reading, share private vows, or exchange wedding day gifts.

Reason #2: Settle Nerves

If you’re the type of person that gets nervous around crowds, doesn’t like to be the center of attention, or gets anxious rather easily, then this is a great option for you. It’s very normal for you to feel nervous, this is likely one of the biggest moments of your life. Emotions can often be heightened. It’s been my experience that after you see your significant other, worries and stress seem to melt away and you can better enjoy your day together with that initial “grand reveal” weight off your shoulders.

Reason #3:The Feelings don’t go away

I am sure you’ve seen a groom reaction video at some point and maybe thought I want that! Doing a first look does not take those emotions away. If the emotions are there, they will be still there at the altar. I’ve seen this firsthand many times.

If you have the personality type that is more private with your emotions, it allows you to have that fully raw moment in an intimate setting. Not to mention, you may even get a better reaction privately when not all eyes are on you and you’re able to talk and be in the moment.

Reason #4: Smooth Timeline

Let me start by saying, no matter how amazing your timeline is something is always going to go off track a least a little bit but having a first look majorly decreases those odds. The reason for that is once you’ve seen your soon-to-be spouse, you can take family photos before the ceremony. This allows for a smooth transition from ceremony to reception without making guest wait while you take photos in between. It also allows a little more time for you and your spouse after the ceremony. Instead of saying “I Do” and immediately turning around to take photos, if those are done ahead of time, you can instead take a moment with your new spouse to process the commitment you just made and be present together while guest finds their seats at the reception.

There are many ways a first look can smooth the timeline but here are a few:

          • Family photos before the ceremony.
          • Private time after the ceremony.
          • Don’t have to worry about coordinating locations so you don’t see each other before.
          • More time for couple portraits.

Reason #5: Be Present at your wedding

“Your wedding day will go by so fast.” I’m sure you’ve heard those words before. It’s not an overstatement. There are so many activities & things to do that sometimes taking it all in just isn’t possible.

Setting aside a private moment for you and your partner beforehand gives you the opportunity to have that intimate time, allows for full emotions, and creates a seamless timeline. Doing this helps you ease through the rest of the day with the most amount of time allowing you to be present and take in all the details you’ve worked so hard on.
